The Revival of Mannequins & I've Been Featured

Recently I attended a party featuring mannequins. (You can read about the story, here! )

I dressed my vintage manny, Miss Lucy Louise, in vintage white, flowers and pearls!

(Oh yeah I had several "looks" as people 

drove by and wondered just what or who was on the boat dock!! haha)

It was so fun to design a costume for Miss Lucy Louise! Now she displays the numerous pearl necklaces that I've acquired either from family or estate sale-ing!  It is amazing how jewelry is always available at these sales!  And talk about reasonable! So many strands of costume pearls...and of course the real deals too!!

Then my friend and me were shopping a local antique mall and spotted several mannequins.  All were old and just a tad eccentric...

There's the 'red hat' lady...

And the 'masked' head...

I can't leave out the 'painted face'...

And the 'fur wearing grand lady'...

The 'red coat lady' not to be confused with the British soldiers during the American Revolution...

Vintage and Thrifty Finds

Out and about on the junkin' road again this week with my friend and me.  And we found some new places to explore too.  Have y'all checked out any consignment stores lately?  Pretty good stuff and really good prices comparatively speaking!  One of our local 'thrift' stores has tripled its selling prices! Ouch!!  So I was happy to find this little spot...(really not little, two levels, chocked full!!)

Of course it had many of the designer brand named clothing, shoes, purses, belts... but upstairs I found the home goods! WOW!!  So many items!  Where to start?  Is it callin' my name...take me, take me!

Now I love the painted furniture but sometimes I like to find pieces that just need a good cleaning and very little TLC!!
This oak side chair can be used in so many places in the home...office, bedroom, kitchen, dining...

Notice the detail.  It is a reproduction of an antique chair but it does have some age on it. (Have you heard that before..meaning it is an older reproduction, probably made USA.)  I like the way it is featured here beside a faux fireplace.

In the next room I found this little bench!

It is in original condition, mahogany finish, some wear and tear but overall looks great!  I would recover the seat cushion but that is easy enough to do.
We called this piece of furniture a gossip bench because one was able to sit comfortably and talk on the telephone. I remember watching the old movies and seeing a gossip bench!  I never had one growing up at home but I've been able to buy and then sell several benches since then.

And just look what is sitting on top of the the first shelf...a rotary dial telephone!

(Do you see the price?  $85.00!  Is this a good price, too much, too cheap?  I don't know because I do not see these very often in my area.)

I was excited to find this little consignment shop.  And I will share more finds with you later.  My friend and me had a great time and plan to visit often!! You never know what you will find as the merchandise continually changes!

Nifty-Westmoreland Glass

What can I say? I'm truly my aunt's niece and the apple did not fall too far from the tree!!
She loved glass! American made glass! I grew up knowing names such as depression glass, Fostoria, Cambridge, Candlewick, Fenton, Milk glass, Westmoreland, to name just a few!

On a recent road trip my friend and me stopped at an antique mall just to look...with no must-haves on the list!  As we were oohing and ahhhing over different items...

(Now I must admit I have an obsession a mild fondness for pink glass! I stayed at this showcase a loooooong time!! Just sayin'... )

Then "what to my 'wandering' eyes should appear..."  around the corner... could it be...walkin' closer... holdin' my breath...

MILK GLASS!!  A lovely punch bowl with stand and punch cups! This where you should see my 'happy' dance!!

Hoping beyond hope that it is Westmoreland milk glass I ventured closer.

Westmoreland was founded by two brothers in Pennsylvania in 1889. In its heyday the company was in the mix of American glass manufacturing creating many styles and colors.  Later one brother sold out to the other and milk glass became the bread and butter of sales. Paneled grape was one of the most popular. Unfortunately by 1984 the company was sold and closed for good to become a storage unit. STORAGE PLACE, seriously, really...
Now I must get on my soapbox for a moment...it hurts me to see so much of our American artistry, creativeness, and ingenuity gone just gone...   
okay back to my story...

It was marked by the seller Westmoreland...14 pieces..missing a ladle...ahhh pretty!!

Unfortunately the punch set did not go home with me...  :(     But it helped to renew my interest and search for great American made glass!!

Dirt Cheap Thrifty Shopping

Let me tell you a story, a true story of where the junkin's road has taken my friend and me this time...

As all of you know I love to travel!  
("That's an understatement!", says my friend. "Just mention GO and you are ready to start the car!")
Anyway, I travel, period! And when I find new places (especially if I find some GOOD junk)  then I get excited and want to share my "finds!"
Soooo, as my friend and me were leaving one of the thrifts in good old T'town (that's Tuscaloosa, AL) I spied this...

That's right a brand new store, located on Skyland Blvd., with lots of good parking!

The stores, Dirt Cheap, came from an idea to empty the shelves of parent store, Treasure Hunt, in their warehouse location, Lumberton, MS.  Needless to say it was a huge success and 25 years later Treasure Hunt/Dirt Cheap is still going strong!  The company is the largest buyer of insurance claims in the United States. They have also added other distressed situations, such as...manufacturer and retailer buybacks, closeouts, bankruptcies, overstocks, liquidations, customer returns and out of season goods.  Now granted some of these items are damaged goods.  However, all good junkers know the thrill is in the hunt!  If you are willing to dig then treasures can be found for CHEAP!!

My friend introduced me to Dirt Cheap when the hubby and I were visiting in Louisiana (remember I love to travel!!)  Everyone in the group came home with wonderful treasures from that trip!!
Then, I found Dirt Cheap in Cottondale (outside of Tuscaloosa) and bought many things.  But today was the first time to visit this new store!

You never know what merchandise is available! And in all stores like this if you see it, want it, then you better buy it because it probably won't be there the next time you go!
I just couldn't resist this cupcake tower...

Cute, RED, perfect shape, and CHEAP, $2.00. Hey, what can I say?!!

Most of you will remember the terrible outbreak of tornadoes that literally tore through Alabama, April 27, 2011. The Tuscaloosa area was hit hard.  So that being said, I don't know if this store is especially catering to the rebuilding phase or if this store plans to carry huge supplies of building materials. And there were lots and lots of building supplies...
